Organization's History & Founders

Minority Athlete Networking etc, Inc. (“MAN”), a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Butler, New Jersey, was founded in 1989 in response to the Central Park Jogger beating incident, where a group of minority youths were accused of beating and raping a female jogger in Central Park. Its founders, three former African-American professional football athletes who played for the New York Giants, Harry Carson, Ron Johnson, and George Martin, were determined to find an avenue to reverse the negative image and low expectation that society has of inner city minority youth and to present positive role models for minority teenagers raised in dysfunctional families and crime ridden communities. The mission of MAN is to make a difference in the lives of the youth in these neighborhoods by bringing educational, social, and workforce development opportunities to these communities.

MAN’s core activities, centered on a continuum of learning, academic achievement, leadership building, and career development, are intended to reclaim the future of the “lost youth” in our society, counteract failure and build character. MAN achieves its goals through multiple methods, including, providing scholarship to college-bound students, developing partnerships with community leaders and corporations that share MAN’s mission, offering mentorship and tutoring programs, and engaging youth in sporting events. As a medium for agencies that address the needs of youth and other underserved populations; MAN fosters collaborations that strengthen the fabric of American society.
